Saul lost his throne because he feared people. David kept his because he knew he was loved by God. The difference between these two kings is the difference between a life built on human approval and a...
Picture the last morning in Egypt. Around two to three million people walk out of slavery in a single night. These are brick makers who had felt the whip. Among them are the elderly and small children...
Israel crossed water on dry ground twice. The first time was the Red Sea. The second time, forty years later, was the Jordan River. Same God and same people. Same miracle: the water stood up, and the...
A Bible sits on a shelf in millions of homes. It holds the truth, and it sets no one free. Jesus did not say the truth will set you free. He said something narrower. "And you shall know the truth, and...
It is the easiest thing in the world to look at your problem. In the wilderness, the Israelites were bitten by venomous snakes. They were in pain. Their wounds were swelling. It was natural to look do...
Leviticus opens with five offerings. Israel brought all five to the same altar, and the same fire consumed them. Yet God attaches the phrase "a sweet aroma" to only three. The last two, the sin offeri...
Your brain will not stop. You lie down at night and a crowd of thoughts shouts over each other. You replay conversations. You rehearse disasters. You solve problems that do not yet exist. And the hard...

In the Old Testament, the enemies of Israel waited for the harvest. When the crops grew, the Midianites swept down and stole the food. Gideon had to thresh wheat in a winepress at night just to hide i...
The Greek language has four words for love. English has one. That single fact has caused more confusion about God than almost any theological debate in history. When a husband says "I love you" to his...
Many Christians believe that God limits their lifespan to seventy or eighty years. They base this belief on a verse in Psalm 90. "The days of our lives are seventy years; and if by reason of strength...
A man gave ten percent of everything he owned to a priest, four centuries before the law of Moses existed. No command. No obligation. No temple. Just a grateful response to the God who delivered him....
In Genesis 24, Abraham sends his unnamed servant to find a bride for his son, Isaac. This historical account is a picture of the Holy Spirit's work today. For two thousand years, the Holy Spirit has b...
Seasons often begin with a storm. You look at your circumstances and feel the wind. The boat sits in the middle of a rough sea. But the storm is not your destination. God did not rescue Israel from Eg...
A doctor can prescribe medication for your panic attacks. A therapist can teach you to reframe your thoughts. But the Bible does something neither one can do: it tells you where fear came from, who de...
