Saul lost his throne because he feared people. David kept his because he knew he was loved by God. The difference between these two kings is the difference between a life built on human approval and a...
In 1535, Miles Coverdale printed the first complete English Bible. In his preface he gave readers one rule for reading it: "It shall greatly help thee to understand Scripture if thou mark not only wha...
Israel crossed water on dry ground twice. The first time was the Red Sea. The second time, forty years later, was the Jordan River. Same God and same people. Same miracle: the water stood up, and the...
Possession usually implies a struggle. We think of "taking ground" as a series of battles where we fight to earn what we hope to keep. But when God spoke to Joshua about the Promised Land, He used a t...
It is the easiest thing in the world to look at your problem. In the wilderness, the Israelites were bitten by venomous snakes. They were in pain. Their wounds were swelling. It was natural to look do...
One of the biggest contrasts I see today between believers and the world is about aging:that the body weakens, memory fades, and nothing can be done about it. But I want to show you three men who illu...
You can sit in a room full of people and still feel alone. A crowded office, a full church, a family dinner, and the seat next to you still feels empty. Loneliness is not about the number of people ar...
A cynic examines a beautiful room and points out the dust. The Book of Jeremiah contrasts two types of people. The cursed man is like a dry shrub in the desert. <scripture> "For he shall be like a shr...
The Greek language has four words for love. English has one. That single fact has caused more confusion about God than almost any theological debate in history. When a husband says "I love you" to his...
Many Christians believe that God limits their lifespan to seventy or eighty years. They base this belief on a verse in Psalm 90. "The days of our lives are seventy years; and if by reason of strength...
Immediately after the Father called Jesus His "beloved Son" at the Jordan River, Jesus went into the wilderness. The devil came to tempt Him. The temptation seemed to be about physical hunger and powe...
Seasons often begin with a storm. You look at your circumstances and feel the wind. The boat sits in the middle of a rough sea. But the storm is not your destination. God did not rescue Israel from Eg...
Burnout isn't always a sin. Sometimes, it's just physics. We often try to push through our exhaustion because we think stopping is a sign of weakness. We tell ourselves to work harder, pray longer, an...
A prophet called down fire from heaven, won a national showdown against 450 false prophets, and outran a king's chariot. The next day, he asked God to let him die. That is burnout. Not a lack of talen...
Most people translate shalom as "peace." That is like translating the word "home" as "a building." Technically correct. Still incomplete. Shalom is one of the richest words in the Hebrew Bible. It app...
It is easy to miss the Savior when you are focused on the crowd. The streets of Jericho were chaotic. People pushed and shoved to get a glimpse of Jesus. But there is a difference between looking at a...
Some teaching makes believers darkness-conscious. It leaves people anxious about the end times and preoccupied with what the devil is doing. When Israel was bitten by serpents in the wilderness, God d...
Elijah called down fire from heaven on a Tuesday. By Wednesday, he sat under a tree and asked God to let him die. That is not a story about weak faith. That is a story about a real prophet in a real b...
God finished all His work, looked at everything He had made, and then did something unexpected. He rested. He did not rest because He was tired. He rested because everything was complete. That single...
When we run away from our problems, we usually end up in the wrong place. Elijah ran from Jezebel until he reached Mount Horeb (Sinai). This was the mountain of the Law. God had not told him to go the...
