Read a promise in the wrong tense and you will file it in the wrong drawer.

Many believers do this with Romans 8:11. They read it, feel a moment of hope, and then push the whole promise into the future. "That will happen at the rapture," they say. So the verse sits in a drawer marked "someday," and it never touches their Tuesday.

But look at the verse carefully.

"But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you."Romans 8:11 (NKJV)

One word locks the timing in place: mortal.

The word translated "mortal" is (thnēta) θνητά — "mortal, subject to death." A mortal body is a body that can still get sick, still grow tired, and still die. That is not a description of your resurrection body. At the rapture, mortality is removed entirely.

"For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality."1 Corinthians 15:53 (NKJV)

So the two promises cannot be the same promise. At the Lord's return, you receive a new, incorruptible body. In Romans 8:11, the Spirit gives life to your present body — the one that woke up this morning, the one that carries a diagnosis, the one that feels its age. The word translated "give life" is (zōopoiēsei) ζῳοποιήσει — "will make alive, will give life to." Paul aims that promise directly at the body you live in today.

If that were the only thing in the verse, it would be enough. But there is more.

Read the verse again and count the persons of the Trinity. "The Spirit" — that is the Holy Spirit. "Of Him who raised" — that is the Father. "Jesus" — that is the Son. Then the verse repeats the pattern. "He who raised" — the Father. "Christ" — the Son. "Through His Spirit who dwells in you" — the Holy Spirit.

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit appear twice in a single verse.

Scripture does not waste words. When God names the entire Trinity two times in one sentence, He is raising His voice on the page. He wants your attention. The Father is involved in the life of your body. The Son is involved. The Holy Spirit is involved. This is not a minor clause in God's program. It is a personal project, signed twice by all three.

And notice where this life comes from. Not from a stage. Not from a special place. "Through His Spirit who dwells in you." The Spirit who raised Jesus out of a sealed tomb has taken up residence inside every believer. The same power that emptied that grave is not far from your body. It lives inside it.

So do not surrender your health to the "someday" drawer. Yes, a glorious body is coming, and we wait for it with joy. But God did not tell you to endure a dying body until then. He promised life — real, present, physical life — to the mortal body you have right now, and He put His full name on the promise twice.

Read the verse in the right tense. Then expect it in the right tense.

God did not write Romans 8:11 for the body you will get; He wrote it for the body you have.
