There is a common fear that often circulates in church pews.

It is the fear that if people feel too secure in their relationship with God, they will become lazy. We worry that if we talk too much about "Blessed Assurance," believers will stop trying. We think that a little bit of anxiety is a good motivator for holiness.

But nothing could be further from the truth.

Insecurity does not produce holiness. Insecurity produces anxiety, hiding, and eventually, sin. When you are unsure of where you stand with God, you don't run toward Him; you run away from Him. You cannot perform well when you are looking over your shoulder, waiting to be cut from the team.

“In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him.” 1 John 4:9

Real transformation happens in an environment of absolute safety. When you know your standing is irrevocable, you are free to walk differently.

We don't need to frighten people into obedience. We need to love them into wholeness.

A secure child grows; a fearful child hides.
