The Difference Between God’s Vision and the Enemy’s

Not every vision is from God.
The enemy can paint images too—quiet impressions, fearful pictures, or flattering fantasies.
But Scripture shows us how different they are when we slow down long enough to look.
Balaam is a surprising example.
He wasn’t Israel.
He wasn’t walking with God.
Yet when he stood on the mountain and looked at God’s people,
“the Spirit of God came upon him… and he saw the vision (machazeh) of the Almighty” (Numbers 24:2–4).
And what did he see?
“Like gardens by the riverside… like cedars beside the waters.”
— Numbers 24:6
A vision full of life, rootedness, stability, and flourishing.
It carries the same fragrance as Psalm 1:
“He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water…” (Psalm 1:3).
God’s visions always look like this:
-
They bring peace, not panic.
-
They speak life, not fear.
-
They anchor you in truth, not confusion.
-
They lead toward Jesus, not self-exaltation.
-
They align with Scripture, never against it.
God’s visions restore, steady, and root your soul.
The enemy’s visions look very different:
-
Urgency without wisdom.
-
Fear without clarity.
-
Images that isolate you.
-
Fantasies that inflate the ego.
-
Ideas that drift away from Scripture.
The enemy’s visions unsettle and distract.
They pull you inward or downward.
They sound spiritual but feel hollow, restless, or heavy.
The difference becomes clearer the more your heart is shaped by God’s Word.
The vision you can trust will always reflect His character.
God’s visions invite you to flourish.
The enemy’s visions lead you to strive.
The vision that comes from God always carries His peace, His truth, and His heart.
