Stripped of Shame: How Jesus Replaced Your Exposure

In ancient warfare, a royal coat declared your rank, your authority, and your future. When David killed Goliath, he stood before the court holding the head of the enemy. Jonathan, the prince of Israel, took an immediate and radical step.
Jonathan removed his external status and handed it to David. By placing his garment upon David, Jonathan declared that David now possessed the royal standing. One man stepped out of his elevated position so another man could walk in it.
This historical event points directly to the cross. Roman soldiers stripped Jesus of His physical clothing before they lifted Him up. He hung exposed before a mocking crowd.
Jesus took absolute nakedness on the cross. Nakedness in Scripture represents the visible result of sin and public humiliation. He did not suffer exposure by accident; He chose it to settle your account with public disgrace. The Greek word used in legal contexts for canceled debts is (exaleipho) ἐξαλείφω — "to wipe out, erase." Jesus erased the criminal charge of your past by bearing the humiliation Himself.
Because Jesus hung stripped on the cross, God places a royal robe upon you. He takes away the filthy garments of your performance failures and covers you completely in His status.
You no longer need to hide your past or protect your reputation through self-defense. Your security does not depend on your social standing or personal achievements. The Son of God traded positions with you on the hill of Calvary. He took your bare exposure so that you could stand before God fully covered in His perfect righteousness.
Jesus endured public nakedness on the cross so you could stand permanently clothed in His righteousness.
